Wireless access to digital resources

50% of the world lives offline. Grey-box is committed to bridging the global divide.

Remote learning remains out of reach for at least 500 million students around the world. Even in North America, half of rural Canadians do not have access to the minimum recommended internet speed.

UNI is a portable hotspot that allows anyone in grey areas to connect to essential resources such as Wikipedia and Khan Academy offline.

OUR SOLUTION

Reliable. Economic. Collaborative.

Grey-box provides wireless access to digital resources such as environmental and geographical databases, supporting content like Wikipedia as well as MOOC-type online courses like Khan Academy, in areas where access to the internet is unreliable.

UNI is a portable, inexpensive, and easy to use local hotspot that can host educational content and customizable internal files. Up to 10 users can connect to UNI with what they already have at hand, within 100 metres of the box.

THE CHALLENGE

Developing servers and traditional computers in the field becomes a challenge. It is difficult to transport, gets expensive, and requires advanced technical knowledge for operation and maintenance. They are also sensitive to environmental conditions such as dust, humidity, and power cuts.

Many local communities and NGOs do not have the technical expertise in place to properly deploy IT tools on the field. However, digital content allows for more interactivity, personalization, and access to larger databases.

HOW DO WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

We take the best educational content available online and we put it in a portable device called UNI. This portable device can be deployed on the field, thanks to our network of partners.

The challenge is to have a technological tool that doesn’t feel like one: it can be set up anywhere within few seconds and run autonomously for days— even if the electric grid is down.

Our commitment is to keep each unit affordable, so that they can be distributed everywhere, and provide free access to quality content to local communities who need them the most.
